Character name: Jenna Sommers
Genre (TV/books/etc): TV
Fandom: The Vampire Diaries
Birthday (if applicable): Unsure (not canonically stated, headcanon TBA)
Canon point: Between 1x22 and 2x01, just after she lets Katherine (who she thinks is Elena) into the house
Why this Character and Canon point?: Normally, I prefer to play characters who have some semblance of supernatural powers because that gives me a lot to work with regarding their reactions to things and ideas for what they can and can't do. This time, I'd like to see how Jenna, a completely normal person with no idea that supernatural even exists (outside a tv show /shot), reacts to the idea of being kidnapped to a world where vampires are real and magic exists. Also aliens. She will flip. It will be awesome.
Programmed Possession: The house she lives in with Jeremy and Elena. It's Jenna's safe place, somewhere she can get away, somewhere she feels safe and in control… mostly.
Abilities/Weaknesses: Jenna's a normal human, lacking any kind of supernatural powers in any way, shape, or form. She's just an average graduate student whose main worries are whether or not she's going to pass her classes and if her niece and nephew are going to pass theirs. Jenna's techie enough to get by in her classes and she knows enough of the internet to be able to do a decent search for Elena's birth mother. Regardless of what ordinary things she's got her mind on (boys are included in that, hello, Alaric), Jenna has emotional strengths and weaknesses just like anybody else. She has a difficult time being in an authoritative role. It's not natural for her and sometimes she does slip up. In that regard, she's prone to making mistakes, especially errors of judgment, like anybody else. She's also fairly easy to manipulate, as she will generally believe a person until they prove to her that she can't trust them. Then, she will hold a grudge over the subject forever and a day… or at least until she's reasonably satisfied they aren't going to screw her over (hello, Scumfell). If she knows and trusts a person, she will generally believe what they tell her, which is why she never suspects that Elena and Alaric are lying to her. One of her biggest weaknesses is how much she cares about other people. She's very easy to manipulate because of this. Someone could very easily threaten someone, say Elena, and Jenna's worry and protectiveness would have her completely at their mercy. She also has self-control issues. As Logan put it, she's "always one step from a maybe, a tiny nudge to yes." However, she's working on this particular issue now that Elena and Jeremy depend on her so much. She can be physically attracted to men she doesn't like and that makes her self-control issues a LOT worse (hi Damon, hi Logan).
Psychology/Personality: Jenna is a teenager at heart. She is very much a party girl still, as she was for a good part of her life (and it didn't end all that long ago). The only difference is that now she understands that she has a responsibility that's more important than what she wants for her own life. Her duty is to care for Jeremy and Elena, and be a good role model for them, but because she didn't have a chance to build up her parental skills (hello getting tossed into the middle of things), Jenna's still learning how to deal with this responsibility. In the second episode of Season one, she comments on how hard it is to deal with teenagers (thank you, Mr. Tanner) and how her sister made it seem so easy. Jenna is prone to feelings of insecurity, especially regarding her sister. Since Jenna was the party girl and Miranda was the good sister, Jenna has had to live in her sister's shadow for much of her life (this is especially due to the age difference between them).
Jenna is resourceful. Having been thrust into the role of guardian for her niece and nephew, she didn't have much time to mourn he loss of her sister and brother-in-law nor to prepare for her new responsibility. She's had to learn as she goes with Jeremy and Elena. Early on, Jenna is aware that she had to be careful of what she says to Jeremy; her problem is that she's not sure what is good to say and what isn't and she's afraid of setting him off. Because of this, she's not so good at discipline. The important thing is that Jenna tries. She knows right and wrong, and she's honestly trying to be a good role model for Elena and Jeremy, though it's a strain on her. Of those important people, Jenna is extremely protective. When Elena disappeared to Atlanta, Jenna was frantic after being unable to contact Elena and having no idea where she was.
In the everyday occurrences, Jenna is a teenager at heart. She very much still acts like one, especially where boys *coughAlariccough* are concerned. She's been known to use sarcasm to brush off concern (she's supposed to be the one taking care of Elena and Jeremy, not the other way around), but she doesn't over use it. She's a pretty terrible liar and people who know her can lead her like an open book. She doesn't try to hide much unless she thinks it will protect someone. After all, she said herself that, "I have no secrets, only dirty shame." Because of this, she can come off as a little scatter-brained. She's also a bit easy to manipulate, especially when the kids aren't around, she has no immediate responsibility, a friend or two are around, and drinks are involved. Her self-control is questionable. Even so, her sense of responsibility is strong, though she's been known to duck around it when she needs to (like the time she hid behind Kelly and Damon at the bar when she noticed Elena was around). This also means after a little wearing down of her walls, she can be persuaded into things, like giving people extra chances when she shouldn't (lookin' at you, Logan Scumfell). Also, when she's drunk, she tends to have a bit of a blabber mouth. No filter at all on what she says. Poor Frederick got shot down hard.
Jenna is also very supportive of those closest to her. She'll help them if they need it, or step back when she has to. At the time Alaric has issues dealing with the mystery surrounding his wife's death and disappearance, Jenna waits for him, telling him to take the time he needs to move on. She's also supportive of Elena and willing to talk or listen if the time comes for it. She's prone to making mistakes like anybody else, but when she does, she usually knows it and she's willing to do what it takes to make the situation better. For the most part, Jenna's an easy-going person, with a tough sarcastic streak at times, who doesn't really get angry easily unless someone insults her or a person she cares about or otherwise threatens them. When that happens and she gets worried, she can get a bit upset, almost to the point of yelling, though she tends to calm down pretty quickly afterward, once she's assured of their safety.
History: Jenna is the kid sister to Miranda Sommers Gilbert, with probably a very good distance in years between them. Jenna was likely about 10 or 11 when Elena was born, 16 years ago, and by then Miranda was married and her husband was a certified doctor. At any rate, Jenna was never particularly uptight. She got through her classes, went to college, partied, graduated, partied, got into grad school (hello psychology major), and partied some more. She was also pretty free with herself and slept with at least two men (who turned out to be pretty hardcore jerks) over that time. When Logan Fell cheated on her and broke her heart, Jenna skipped town rather than face him. She stayed away until the sudden deaths of her sister and brother-in-law; after that, she was named Jeremy and Elena's guardian, so she returned to Mystic Falls in order to care for them while still attending grad school.
Four months later, on Elena and Jeremy's first day of school since their parents' deaths, Jenna's at least trying to become a better role model for the kids. By this point, Jenna is trying her hand at responsibility, catching herself and telling Elena not to stay out late because it's a school night. She's honestly trying her best, even though it's not natural to her yet.
Jenna asks Elena for help regarding her wardrobe for parent-teacher conferences, where she goes to meet the history teacher (at the time), Mr. Tanner. This is also the point she starts realizing how much she's going to have to watch over Jeremy. She basically gets told off about her lack of parenting skills (aka she gets "Tannered") and realizes just how much effort she'll have to put into dealing with these kids in order to be effective. It also opens her eyes to how she used to be and how she can't let Jeremy go down that same path. She tries to give Jeremy a talk, actually getting angryish (okay, she made him come sit down by raising her voice; it kind of counts). It seems to be going pretty well until she makes the mistake of turning her back to him. He walks out on her and she lacks the strength or will to call him back, knowing she's lost her point anyway. Later on, she has a more successful girl talk about boys with Elena. Jeremy walks in halfway through and Jenna confronts him about where he was, starting her hand at parental authority by throwing an apple at his head. An apple. Jeremy brushes her off like it's no big deal anyway. This makes her realize that she has to step it up a notch and become her "worst nightmare" by going through Jeremy's room for the drugs. She wants to prevent, or at least slow down, his problem. Elena walks in, Jenna admits to her worries that she's not doing it right (and also her inferiority complex regarding her sister), and the two of them bond.
While watching the news one day, Jenna voices her opinion (and some of her past) regarding one Logan Fell, who she fondly refers to as "Logan Scumfell." At the Founder's Ball, Jenna runs into him and makes it quite clear that she's not pleased to see him. However, his charms start to get to her before she reminds him of the girl he cheated on her with, leaving him to his thoughts. Towards the end of the ball, he tries again and she finally really starts to cave, agreeing to lunch with him. After the ball, Jenna admits to the date, to Elena at least, and after a small talk, the younger ends up making her feel worse about her boy troubles. Pathetic, indeed, for loving a guy so much her world stopped spinning because he was an ass to her. Thanks, Elena. Jenna actually does show up to dinner with Logan, telling him he has an hour and to "make it count." It goes well and she spends the next day with him at the car wash. Later on, Elena asks him for a favor and he agrees to it in order to get back in Jenna's good graces. She says it's a "very reluctant maybe."
After Stefan and Elena have a fight, Jenna picks up on it, flopping down next to Elena and commenting that she's "wallowing." Logan had sent her an email saying he was leaving town (hahahahaha oh vampire doom) and that was all she got on the subject. Shot down by the great Scumfell. Again. This is the point of Jeremy's transformation. Jenna has no idea that Damon did anything at all to him, so his sudden interest in his homework is a bit of a shock to her. Later on, Jenna and Jeremy sit at a table at the Mystic Grill and talk about his extra credit assignment for the new history teacher, Alaric Saltzman, who happens to be sitting nearby. Alaric walks up and Jenna takes an immediate shine to him, thanking him for giving Jeremy a second chance. After a while, Jeremy "ditches" Jenna, so she goes to sit at the bar with Alaric for a bit and the two chat a little about their histories. She lies very pointedly about why she left, saying it was school (we all know the truth), but she can't keep the cover-up going. So she tells him the truth about Logan and how he broke her heart. Alaric's turn at show and tell gives her the basic story about his wife, which leaves her feeling a bit shamed for prying. They end up having a very nice evening regardless and by the time he takes her home, they're arguing over who's the most pathetic with grins on their faces. And Jenna is officially hooked like a schoolgirl.
Later that night… the Scumfell lands outside her door. He's pretty persistent about having her invite him in and fails miserably on several Bluff checks regarding that email he apparently didn't send. He pushes her, prods at her, and in the end she medium-slams the door in his face because he "pointed out that I have no self-control." The next day (or so), Elena says it's the "three-strike rule" and Jenna's not even allowed to watch the news anymore. Jenna agrees, saying, "No more Logan Scumfell." At the Career Day fair, Jenna notices that Logan's returned and quickly gravitates to Elena to hide. When she tells Elena and Stefan that "the Scumfell has landed," Stefan takes off, which completely confuses her. She and Elena follow, but Stefan tells Elena to take Jenna elsewhere, which she does. Jenna has no idea what's going on, but she's glad to get away from Logan anyway. The two of them talk about how Logan acted when he came to the house. Elena's just telling Jenna never to talk to Logan again (like she's the adult here) when Alaric walks up. Jenna is very happy about this. Eventually, Elena leaves to find Stefan and then Jenna heads home.
That night, Elena is basically kidnapped by Damon and taken down to Atlanta. When Jenna calls, Elena tells her she went to Bonnie's for the night and then straight to school. Jenna's worried sick and practically yelling because of it. When Elena finally comes home, Jenna's still worried sick and expresses as much, so they end up having an argument about lying and trust. Elena throws it back in Jenna's face, blindsiding her with the realization that Elena now knows (somehow) that she's adopted. Jenna's argumentative side deflates completely. Eventually, they do get a chance to talk about it and Jenna spills the whole story, what little she knows. Later that night, she chaperones the school dance because Alaric asked her to. She very happily spends time with him there. After a bit of a scuffle that she knows NOTHING about, he takes her home. There's a little date talk, she looks disappointed when he makes it very clear that the chaperoning gig was NOT a date, and then he asks her on a real one. Which she gladly accepts. And then tells him he can take all the time he wants to get over his wife. They should just be themselves. He says he'll try to keep the "Isobel talk" to a minimum, unknowingly dropping a bombshell on Jenna's head: his wife shares the first name of Elena's birth mother and that she was from a town not far away from Mystic Falls.
Jenna has a background talk with Damon, wherein he only tells her about 0.5% of his actual life story. (Like she knows any better.) She admits to having dated other losers. (At least she's being honest.) And apparently Logan is now in the Bahamas working on his tan. How very sheltered she is. (Pro tip: Staking =/= tanning.) She's also drinking pretty well. Elena interrupts their pre-dinner talk. After a lot of things happen that Jenna again has nooo idea about, she sees Stefan come downstairs from Elena's room and warns him that he can't stay the night. Her foot is beginning to find its… footing. Very stiff footing. This is when Elena gets kidnapped. Again. Elena, quit doing that and stay in the damn car.
At some point, Elena asks Jenna to do some digging about Isobel, which Jenna does and then shares with Elena. She also tells Elena about Alaric's wife Isobel. While hanging a banner for the Mystic Falls Founder's Day party, Alaric finally gets around to kissing Jenna… a gesture she soon blows apart (quite knowingly and regretfully) by dropping her own bombshell on him regarding Isobel: that Elena's birth mother shares his wife's name. She shows him a picture of Isobel as a teenager to try to find out if it was the same person and his reaction pretty much clenches it. At the Founder's Day Fundraiser Raffle, Jenna talks to him again and apologizes for the bombshell. She ends the night winning the raffle for a date with him, though he's back to acting really stand-offish with her and she has no clue why.
Jenna meets Anna and her mother Pearl to talk about possibly selling her brother-in-law's office. Not long after, Jenna pays a visit to the Mystic Grill and runs into her old friend, Kelly Donovan, who is talking to Damon at the bar. It doesn't take much coercing from them to get her to sit down for a couple of shots and a drink or two, even though her conscience is telling her not to. "This is not gonna end well." They clinkclink their shot glasses, tip back, and the downward spiral begins. Meanwhile, Elena's double date is nearby and when Jenna notices, she tries to hide to save her pride and conscience. Not long after, Kelly and Damon start getting it on with the cherries and Jenna takes it as her cue to leave. She does not want to be a third wheel. On her way out, she ends up breaking a heel and runs into a creepy man. Unbeknownst to her, he tries to compel her to go with him (like she knows… sigh), but she's wearing vervain, so it doesn't work. She leaves for home sufficiently creeped out.
After that, good old jerky ex number 2874794 shows up: none other than one John Gilbert, Elena and Jeremy's annoying uncle. On their dad's side. Not related at all to Jenna. And she is GLAD for this. Ass. Her sarcasm gets kicked up into gear again, on par with what she used on Logan. At dinner that night, John and Jeremy talk about Gilbert family traditions in front of Jenna. Jeremy asks why Jenna hates John so much. John replies that they "used to sleep together," which prompts Jenna to hit him with a rolled up newspaper. Ass. At the Founder's Day Party, she again spends time with Alaric (you'd think they had a thing going on). Jenna helps Elena get ready for the Miss Mystic Falls contest, and the two share a little more conversation and bonding time over the topic of Elena's mother. Even though Elena comments that she'd probably be having more fun if her mom was there, Jenna brushes it off with a joke instead of getting upset over the minor slight.
After the big Founder's Day Celebration, Katherine (disguised as Elena) turns up. Jenna opens the door to find what she thinks is Elena making out with Damon and gets (rightfully) angry, demanding that Elena come inside. Katherine does so and when Jenna demands to know what she's doing, Katherine brushes her off and heads to the kitchen. Jenna gives her space and that's the last Jenna knows of home.
For the most part, Jenna's left in the dark about everything and what she does find out about is usually some form of a lie, like Uncle John hitting his head (blame Isobel). Actually, blame everyone. Makes it easier.
